How geode cracking works

Every shop runs it a little differently, but the experience is the same: you pick it, you crack it, you keep both halves.

Pick your geode

Shops sell uncut geodes by size, usually from a bin or barrel. Most are "coconut" geodes from Mexico, round and rough on the outside. No two are alike, and nobody knows what is inside until it opens.

Crack it open

The geode goes into the cracking device, which tightens a chain evenly around the shell. Depending on the shop it might be a wheel you turn, a tabletop ratchet, a lever, or a hydraulic press. You can start it, and the shop finishes the crack in the device until it splits with a pop.

Hollow geodes are lined with quartz crystals, often clear or smoky, sometimes purple amethyst. Solid ones show banded agate. Either way, you keep both halves.

What is this site?

A simple, neutral list of shops around the world that let customers crack geodes in store. Shops ask to be listed; nobody is added without their permission.

How much does it cost?

It varies by shop and by geode size. Most shops price by size or weight, starting around a few dollars for small geodes. Contact the shop for current pricing.

My shop is missing. How do I get listed?

Use the opt-in form. Listings are free, and you can ask to be removed at any time.

Does this site sell geodes or equipment?

No. The site only points you to shops. It does not sell anything, and it does not list who supplies each shop.

Can I bring my own geode?

Some shops will crack one you bring in and some will not. Call ahead and ask.
